27.) "LOS 5 VERBOS MODALES: CAN / COULD / MAY Y MIGHT / MUST / SHOULD

"Can you help me move the piano"?







- Los verbos modales van antes del verbo principal
- Dan cierta información acerca del verbo
- Se usan con el verbo en infinitivo sin "TO"


1.) CAN = Poder o saber hacer algo
Ejemplos:
-I can speak several languages = Se hablar varios idiomas
-She can play tennis very well  = Ella sabe jugar al tenis muy bien
-Can you sing? = ¿Sabes cantar?
-Can you help me? = ¿Me puedes ayudar?
-Can I speak to the manager? = ¿Puedo hablar con el director?
-We can see the fireworks from here = Podemos ver los fuegos artificiales desde aquí

*Para negar con "CAN" + "NOT", 
se usa la contracción : CAN´T
Ejemplos:
-I can´t go to the party because I don´t feel well = No puedo ir a la fiesta porque no me encuentro bien
-I can´t sleep with all the noise in the street = No puedo dormir con todo el ruido en la calle
-We can´t continue due to the snow on the road  = No podemos continuar debido a la nieve en la carrtera
-Can´t you call your father to pick you up?   = ¿No puedes llamar a tu padre que te recoja? 
-Paula can´t drive yet. = Paula aun no puede conducir

2.) COULD : = Podía / podría / sabia
COULD es el pasado de CAN
Se usa para pedir o preguntar algo;es mas formal y para reflejar una habilidad o una posibilidad

Ejemplos:
-Could you tell me where the station is? = ¿Me podría decirme donde está la estación?
-Could you please help me with this? = ¿Me podrías ayudarme con esto por favor?
-I could play tennis very well when I was younger = Podía jugar al tenis muy bien cuando era mas joven
-Juan could work in London if his English were better  = Juan podría trabajar en Londres si su ingles fuera mejor
-María could already play the piano when she was five years old  = Mará ya podía tocar el piano cuando  tenía cinco años
-I could have worked in Madrid, but I didn´t want to  = Podría haber trabajado en Madrid, pero no quería


*Para negar con "COULD" + "NOT" usando 
la contracción : COULDN´T
-We couldn´t go on vacation this summer = No pudimos irnos de vacaciones este verano
-My grandfather couldn´t swim = Mi abuelo no sabía nadar
-Couldn´t you hear me calling you? = No podías oírme llamándote?
-Susan couldn´t find a job, so she went to China to teach English  = Susan no podía encontrar trabajo, así que se fue a China a enseñar ingles
-I couldn´t find my keys anywhere  = No pude encontrar mis llaves por ninguna parte

3.) MAY y MIGHT = Puede que
Se usa para expresar que hay cierta posibilidad
MAY se usa para expresar mas posibilidad en hacer algo o que algo ocurra
Con "MIGHT" - La posibilidad es algo menor

Ejemplos:
-It may rain this afternoon = Puede que llueva esta tarde (es mas probable que llueva)
-There may be a party at Peter´s house  =  Puede que haya una fiesta en la casa de Peter
-I may get home a little late  =  Puede que llegue a casa un poco tarde
-My mother may ride her bicycle one day when her legs gets better  = Mi madre puede que vaya en bici un día cuando su pierna se ponga mejor
-It might rain tomorrow  = Puede que llueva mañana (es menos probable que llueva)
-We might go to London next week = Puede que vayamos a Londres la semana que viene
-Susan might come to the party = Puede que Susan venga a la fiesta
-I might buy a Honda Gold Wing one day = Puede que me compre una Honda Gold Wing un día

* Para pedir permiso se usa "MAY" y es mas formal que "CAN"
-May I use your telephone to make a call =  ¿Puedo usar tu teléfono para hacer una llamada?
-May we sit here? = ¿Podemos sentarnos aquí
-May I smoke? = ¿Puedo fumar?
-May I speak to the manager please?  =  ¿Puedo hablar con el director por favor?

4.) MUST = Deber
Se usa cuando creemos que algo es verdadero
Ejemplos:
-You must be hungry. You haven´t eaten all day = Debes de tener hambre. No has comido en todo el día
-I must have left my keys at the restaurant = Debo haberme dejado mis llaves en el restaurante
-She must be depressed after the divorce = Debe de estar deprimida después del divorcio
-You must drive carefully, as it´s raining cats and dogs  = Tienes que conducir con cuidado, ya que está lloviendo a cántaros

"MUST" también se usa para decir que es necesario, importante hacer algo con cierta obligación
Ejemplos:
-You must see a doctor  =  Debes ver a un medico
-I must speak better English to get the job  = Debo hablar mejor el ingles para conseguir el trabajo
-We must leave. It´s late  = Debemos irnos. Es tarde
-I must stop and rest. I´m driving for more than four hours = Debo parar y descansar. Estoy conduciendo durante mas de cuatro horas
-You must call the police  =  Debes llamar a la policía

*Para negar se une "MUST" + "NOT" usando la contracción : MUSTN´T
Ejemplos:
-I mustn´t forget to call my boss = No debo olvidarme de llamar a mi jefe
-We mustn´t arrive late to the airport = No debemos llegar tarde al aeropuerto
-You mustn´t park there or you´ll get a ticket  = No debes aparcar allí o tendrás una multa
-People mustn´t smoke in front of children  =  La gente no debe fumar delante de los niños

5.) SHOULD = Debería
Se usa para aconsejar o dar opiniones sobre algo
Ejemplos:
-You should go by bike to work  = Deberías ir en bici al trabajo
-I think you should call her = Creo que deberías llamarla
-You should go to the dentist  = Deberías ir al dentista
-You should apologise to her =  Deberías disculparte a ella
-Should we visit Tony at the hospital?  = ¿Deberíamos visitar a Tony en el hospital?

*Para negar se une SHOULD + NOT usando la contracción : SHOULDN´T
Ejemplos:
-You shouldn´t drive if you´ve drunk = No deberías conducir si has bebido
-You shouldn´t say those things about him = No deberías decir esas cosas acerca de el
-It shouldn´t be difficult to find their house = No debería ser difícil encontrar su casa
-Shouldn´t we call the police? = ¿No deberíamos llamar a la policia?
-She shouldn´t have spoken to her boss in that way  = No debería haber hablado a su jefe de esa manera

Hay muchos verbos en inglés donde cada verbo tiene su "preposición correspondiente"

Otra cosa son "LOS VERBOS COMPUESTOS" ("PHRASAL VERBS"), verbos con su preposición para formar una palabra nueva

Ejemplos
Get up = Levantarse
Call back = Volver a llamar
Put on = Ponerse
Take off = Quitarse
Pick up = Recoger
Turn off  = Apagar
Go over = Repasar

Si se usa otro verbo detrás de una preposición, hay que poner el verbo en gerundio

Se usa el "GERUNDIO" de muchas formas:

Se puede poner el verbo en gerundio como sujeto de la frase
Ejemplos
-Riding my bike everywhere fun = Ir en bici a todas partes es dirvertido
-Eating Mediterranean food is good for you  = Comer comida Mediteranea es bueno para ti
-Not driving when drinking is a "must"  = No conducir cuando bebes es "esencial"
-Driving to work everyday is "a hassle" = Ir en coche todos los diás en un "royo / coñanzo"
-Having finished my exam, I got up and gave it to the teacher  = A terminar mi examen, me levanté y se lo di a la profesora

El "GERUNDIO" también se usa con el presente continuo: sujeto+verbo ser/estar+gerundio
